Introduction

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) are a legal requirement for private landlords in the UK. They are also highly recommended to business owners as they have legal obligations under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure safety. These obligations can be interpreted as necessitating an EICR.

The report identifies any damage, deterioration, defects and any other notable conditions found by the inspector which may indicate and danger or risks.

Once you’ve received your EICR Report you’ll find a variety of codes, which we will explain within this blog.

EICR Classification Code C1 (Danger Present)

The safety of those using the appliance or installation is at risk and immediate action is required.

A C1 Classification Code identifies immediate risk and the person responsible for the maintenance of the appliance or installation should conduct immediate remedial action. Your EICR Report will provide further guidance and advice.

EICR Classification Code C2 (Potentially Dangerous)

Whilst using the installation may not be an immediate risk, urgent remedial action is required to remove potential danger.

A C2 code identifies that whilst theres not immediate danger in using the appliance, urgent action is needed to prevent a danger from occurring. Again your report will provide further guidance to the exact nature of the potential danger.

EICR Classification Code C3 (Improvement Recommended)

The inspection and/or testing has revealed a non-compliance with the current safety standard which, whilst not presenting immediate or potential danger, would result in a significant safety improvement if remedied.

A C3 Code is present whent eh appliance or installation does not pose any danger, however it does not meet current safety standards. Therefor improvements are recommended to bring the appliance or installation to a safer standard.

A C3 code on its own does not mean an EICR fail.

EICR Classification Code FI (Further Investigation Needed)

An FI Code indicates that further investigation is needed which is likely to reveal a danger, or potential danger, that the initial inspection could not identify.

EICR’s are limited in their depth of investigation, meaning that this code is used when the inspector is limited by what they can investigate but believe a danger may be found upon further investigation.
